Eye Movement De-sensitisation and Re-processing

EMDR or 'Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing'. EMDR is a powerful psychological treatment method that uses eye movements and other bi-lateral stimulation to alleviate anxiety and other stressful symptoms caused by traumatic memories. The therapy has been used increasingly to treat post-traumatic stress disorder and other traumas. It is a recognised treatment for trauma and listed in the NICE guidelines.

EMDR has demonstrated benefits in treating psychological trauma. It is a process of desensitisation which is aimed at reducing the intensity of disturbing thoughts and memories of past experiences. This has shown to be particularly beneficial for people who experience any of the following:

  • post-traumatic stress disorder
  • flashbacks
  • nightmares and panic attacks.
  • childhood sexual and/or physical abuse or neglect
  • natural disaster
  • physical assault
  • surgical trauma,
  • road traffic accidents
  • workplace accidents and incidents

Since its original development, EMDR is also increasingly used to help individuals with other issues including performance anxiety, pain management and other difficulties. EMDR has been found to be of benefit to children as well as adults.

EMDR is a complex and powerful therapy that facilitates the process of desensitisation which is aimed at reducing the intensity of disturbing thoughts and memories of past experiences.
